Objectifs

Major intended learning outcomes

1/Understanding of Energy Systems: Students should gain a deep understanding of various energy systems, including traditional fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. This includes learning about the technical, environmental, and economic aspects of energy production and consumption.

2/Insight into Territorial Development: The course would cover how energy needs and resources affect and are influenced by territorial development. This involves studying the planning and implementation of energy projects and infrastructure in relation to geographic, economic, and social factors.

3/Policy and Planning Skills: Students are expected to learn about the policies and planning frameworks at local, regional, and national levels that guide energy development and territorial management. This includes tools like Spatial Planning (SCOT), Local Urban Plans (PLU), and Territorial Climate-Air-Energy Plans (PCAET).

4/Sustainability and Environmental Impact: An emphasis on sustainable development within the context of energy and territorial planning, assessing the environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, and ecosystem impacts.

5/Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to analyze complex energy and development issues and propose innovative and sustainable solutions. This outcome is crucial for preparing students to handle real-world challenges in energy and regional planning sectors.

6/Collaborative and Leadership Skills: Through group projects and presentations, students develop collaborative working skills and leadership abilities, essential for careers in energy and territorial development fields.

Presentation by Christian CHAPUZET on "Energy & Territorial Development"

Evolution of energy needs, fossil resources, and greenhouse gas emissions; geopolitical context; financing of the energy transition; new energies; energy storage; water resources and rare metals.

Presentation by Christian CHAPUZET on "Climate & Energy and Territorial Management in France"

Planning and organization at the national/European, regional, and EPCI levels; operational tools (PCAET, SCOT, PLU, PAE, Agenda 21, BEPOS, TEPOS); web links for accessing all resources.

Second 3-hour session:

Formation of groups of 2 or 3 students to promote collaborative work, free choice for group formation.

PowerPoint presentation by each student (15-20 minutes) on a freely chosen theme (renewable energies, solar, hydrogen, intermittent storage, decarbonized mobility, financing of the energy transition, acceleration levers, etc.)

For each group, an average grade is given based on the 2 or 3 presentations.

 Third 3-hour session:

New groups formed by the trainer.

Different work requested from each student for their second 15-20 minute PowerPoint presentation:

Reflect on the types of jobs and companies they would like to work in after their SOLEM training > the choice of a second-year internship is crucial as a stepping stone to future employment.

Present a summary of their skills and expertise, which will help in applying for the second-year

internship.

Provide an example of a company and a growing sector that could be a target for the second-year internship.

For each group, the grade is the average of the 2 or 3 presentations.

Final individual grade for each student and the average of the 2 groups they participated in.

Note: high-quality presentations for the 8 students of the M1 SOLEM 2023-2024 cohort.

 Final 1.5-hour session:

Experience feedback from students who have already worked

Presentation of their professional experiences, the positives, the negatives, and the lessons learned, and what choices (or non-choices) they think they will make in the future.

Presentation by Christian CHAPUZET

Experience feedback from a Senior Business Manager with 40 years of career, including 15 years in the field of Sustainable Development (Project Management, team management, network approach, job searching, organization, etc.)

Discussion with students, especially regarding the feedback shared by those with professional experience.

Objective: for each student to have leads, or even an agreement before the summer vacation, for their 6-month internship starting in early 2025.

Sharing of useful links in this process: Regional Economic Agency, Poles and Clusters on energy and environmental themes, positions in local authorities.
