Description
INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINOLOGY
This course aims to provide an introduction to criminology as it is studied in the anglophone world. It begins by discussing the meaning of criminology, examining key criminological trends from classicism to positivism, through to critical criminology. It then aims to adopt a critical approach to the study of crime and social harm. Finally, it seeks to understand state responses to the prevention and repression of crime in their political, social and cultural context. The course will draw on a number of case studies in order to highlight the deeply political nature of interpretations of crime and punishment, helping students to understand the complex interaction between law and society.
